Stories and Rupas

Day two of the course block. Our student group is bigger than its been for a while, and lively discussion of the basic principles of other-centred work keeps us in serious engagement through large and small group sessions interspersed with demonstrations and counselling exercises. The principle that, since the mind is conditioned by the object of attention (basic Abhidharma principles), holding the client's attention on the objects in their world and encouraging a deeper, more respectful engagem… Continue

Autumn course block

As the afternoon wears on and the sun dips lower in the sky it gets distinctly chilly. Not so good for our overseas students! The autumn course block always comes at that time of year when things are on the turn and sunny golden September days have faded into damp October. Nevertheless this lunchtime the sun came out and we enjoyed lunch in the garden. It looks to be the start of a good year. New students have swelled our numbers so we had 22 participants in the room this morning, with a number… Continue

Order Meeting

A group of ten of us raise our joined palms and sing, drawing back in a graceful dance, hearts opening with the gentle harmonies. The Order meeting comes to an end. Four intense days in which we have all shared moments of joy and struggle, in which new forms have emerged and our resolution has strengthened reach conclusion. It is hard to believe that the Order is now eleven years old and maturing. Many of us have taken this path together seeing so many twists and turns along the way. It is wond… Continue

RETURNING

A long drive between worlds, we arrive back in the Buddhist house last night, the car weighed down with pumpkins, walnuts, marrows, leeks, apples, celeriac, parsnips, jars of jam and chutney and miscellaneous left overs. The roads had been pretty clear and the countryside beautiful as ever - France has such expanses of woodland, and open farmland. We took the catermaran - now run by LD ferries, but previously speed ferries and before that the seacat. It hits the channel at the run, making the cr… Continue

Everything changes, nothing changes

Sitting at table watching the parade of birds, insects, light, leaves, everything is in motion. The small birds dart from seed head to seed head in our overgrown flowerbed, enjoying the teasles, the fennel and the mullien. The partridge visits us, startlingly large and noisy as it struts undaunted a few feet away from our table. dragon flies perch on our telephone wires (what ever attracts them there? Three of them. Are they listening in?) Yet all is still. The late summer sun is hot, bathing t… Continue

Chopping wood and carrying... heavy machinery

A misty autumn morning, and we were loading the ground clearing machine into the back of the car for a careful drive to Monsieur le Garagiste. At la garage we met Robert and Lesley who just happened to be paying a friendly visit. Monsieur took one look at the (heavy) machine and told us it had a belt missing. Said part seems to have disappeared into thin air under the walnut tree. Back at the ranch, coffee with R & L whilst R arranges to borrow saw table. This sets us wood cutting in earnest… Continue

Amida France

Arrived in Amida France after a pleasant drive down through France. We stopped in Chartres for a couple of hours to look at the Cathedral and enjoy a coffee in the square. The ancient stones, worn smooth under foot by centuries of the faithful, are deeply moving. Much of the drive was through stunning woodland - firs the rolling hills of Normandy and nearer home, the flat forrested wet lands of the Sologne. We found the house in good shape. The garden brimming with produce enabled us to produce… Continue

BUDDHISM & PSYCHOTHERAPY - Paper

The following is a draft contribution to a chapter on Buddhism and Psychotherapy for a book to be publishede in Polish. Since I gather the final version has been very cut down from the original word limit, I am putting my original here so others can read it. I may eventually publish elsewhere so if you want to quote me please check out the reference. Ning strips out foot notes (of which there are 68 in the original) so if you want the references for this piece, do email me for a word version.Continue

PURELAND AND CHRISTIANITY

I responded to a post by Richard, but wanted to also post a somewhat edited version of my response on my blog so others can respond to me if they want without clogging up Richard's page: I came across your post, Richard, rather belatedly. I am touched by what you say, and particularly the loyality you feel to Christianity. I felt I wanted to share a bit. Pureland Buddhism has brought me great peace in this respect. I went through periods of deep faith and profound doubt at different stag… Continue

Review just published on Wildmind “Guilt: An Exploration” by Caroline Brazier reviewer Vajradevi (April 30, 2009) A leading Buddhist teacher writes about the knotty problem of guilt, but chooses to do so through a blend of fictional narrative, autobiography, and commentary. Vajradevi reveals all. Caroline Brazier is a Buddhist practitioner and a psychotherapist of many years standing. She is a course l… Continue

Case against Psychotherapist Registration in the UK

Last week David and I attended a meeting in London of the Alliance for Counselling and Psychotherapy. This group is creating an on-line petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/statereg/petition.html so if you are a UK based therapist and are concerned about these matters, please sign. At our next course block, we intend to hold an evening session at 7.00pm on Saturday 2nd May in place of the student seminar, to discuss this topic. We are opening the meting to counsellors and therapists in the… Continue

I couldn’t possibly do that, I’d feel too guilty!

I couldn’t possibly do that, I’d feel too guilty! How often have you heard someone say something of this kind, or even said it yourself? To listen to people’s reactions, you’d think that feeling guilty was the worst thing that could happen to a person. Indeed, since I started writing on the topic, I’ve come to realise that guilt has become one of the great taboos of our time. Talking about sex and death are positively popular by comparison. The late twentieth century saw many changes. I… Continue
