For Agoraphobics,a Devotional Hymn.

Don't worry,  baby.

You don't have to go, tempted by Self Service,to the

Bright five thousand mile plain

Of the supermarket and stand rigid with fear in

Aisles where, even if you do glimpse it

Enlightenment is

Always on the top shelf, with not an assistant in sight.

No,baby,

Go instead to your friendly 'Open All Hours'.

The door may stick slightly when pushed by

People weighty with respectability, newly forgiven on…

On Individualistic Spirituality

In my opinion, on some social networks there appears to be a tendency to avoid challenges altogether in order to protect beliefs.

The rationale seems to be that the intent of the challengers is merely to « make wrong, » and that those who challenge are just not « confident in their own beliefs. »

But what then if the intent is not to « make wrong » ? What if the intent is to shed a different light ? What if the prompting comes from the heart and not the ego ? What if the… Continue

Liberation is not a technique

There are correspondences between the world of psychotherapy and that of religion. Some have suggested that psychotherapy is a modern profession that tries to fill in the gap for people in the age of technology left by the loss of religious faith and institutions. It is certainly true that research repeatedly shows that those with religious faith generally enjoy better mental health than those who lack it, but can this deficiency be remedied by rational technical means?

Along…

Allowing emptiness instead of running away for it.

' Rest more', were the lasts words that Jnanamati said to me before we left Amida France. 'Play more', were the last words of Aramati. They were so right!

My life is filled with working...oké, meaningful work as psychotherapist...but this is a pitfall: it gives an excuse and reason  for my style of running away from living alone in my empty house, what gave a mood of a grab, infertile emptiness without connection with a bigger mind and world. I lived like this last year: satisfied in…

neither pessimist nor optimist in this hard rain.

This is about responding to our ecological crisis. We can see it as an emergency or catastrophe or both. What I want to draw attention to is what I see in many responses; the need for optimism.  Underlying this is the fear that community paralysis will come from a belief that we have already passed tipping points; that catastrophe is already assured.

No-one can know if this is the case and we all hope not. But it is a possibility. I see much that is unreal in the current approach of…

The more I encounter other life forms...

The more I encounter other life forms, the more I am affirmed in my own:

The truth of this dawned as I walked through my local park this morning. Walking along immersed in my own rambling thoughts; I was only superficially aware of the chattering magpies and carrion crows, in dispute as usual, over something or other.

Suddenly I’m aware of a movement of colour off to my left. I…

Dharma Training

We talk about Dharma training, but sometimes people are confused about the nature of this "training". By Dharma training we mean character transformation for the purpose of making one a more fitting instrument for the transmission of the Dharma. In this modern age of credentials, training courses and qualifications people may ask "What course should I follow in order to get my Buddhist training?" or "how will I get my Buddhist training certificate?" but this kind of training does not work in…

Lovely in its beginning, lovely in its progress and lovely in its consummation.

The newly enlightened Buddha was travelling to go to see the five ascetics with whom he had formerly practised. On the way he met two merchants. They were converted to his message and became the first Buddhists and lay followers. He taught them to take refuge in the Buddha and the Dharma (there being no sangha at that time). Then he arrived at the place where the five ascetics were and they, remembering that he had abandoned them resolved not to honour him, but when he appeared his bearing…
