HI Modgala. Many thanks for your reply. Is all help good help? and how do we see beyond our own guilt etc, that you mention? ie how do we know that what we are doig is ' the right thing'? I hope that you are well. Majid

Dear Majid, i agree utterly that what is needed tis to change hearts and minds, not to throw money and help around which is often little more than a sticking plaster. Often i think it is our inherited guilt which we either see or deny that leads t...

Hello, Robert. I really don;t visit this site as often as I should!. I've just read your post about Anica. It was about six weeks ago, so i really hope that all went well at your visit. I get the feeling that the types of things to include in your...

Dear Majid, I am very well thank you, but a few weeks ago I had this flu for about one day- so i think very little for me to find to complain about. Majid, yes I find hope in people, in how they live their lives in sometimes desperate circumstance...

HI Robert, Thankyou sincerely for sharing these with us, and it is what never fails to remind me that hope will always overcome despair... I trust that you are well. So what is it that you do?

dear majid, no answers, just a few different things i have noticed. a friend here in melbourne, life on the line, much pain, waits months for even exploratory surgery. living in our thai village and sharing a room with a lady on her deathbed, like...

Hi Robert, and thankyou for your reply When I was recently oin my short trip in gambia, I observed a lot. Yes, there was poverty. yes there is injustice. What I tried to concern myself with the most was what the root cause of this injustice was, a...

I have some personal understanding of the asian situation. There have been two economies. I suspect the situation in the cities of poor asian nations is not so different to those of africa, particularly in phnom penh, also even in bangkok, for the...

Hi david. Many thanks for your thoughts. What you have described is a very reasonable explanation of the way things are. What I'd really love to know is what you feel we should do about it now that we find ourselves confronted with this 'hopeless ...

Let me be controversial [for a change :-) ]. Some of the problem of Africa is that it has not developed economically. If you compare countries that were colonised by European powers and then decolonised in Africa with similarly colonised and decol...

About Me:
Really interested in Amida as a whole, and all that it stands for, I find it so inspiring that people are putting the words of the Buddha into action in this modern day world. I work extensively with substance misusers ( addicts of heroin) and would hope to apply the principles of buddhist psychology/ psychotherapy to help alleviate thier suffering. I look forward to meeting many like minded people. Peace to you all!
Amida Membership
Would like to be a member
Faith Background & Affiliation
islamic upbringing, with a great respect for its traditions, but also massive respect for world religions generally, buddhism in particular. probably 'careful agnostic' is the best way to describe this part of me
Occupation or Primary Activity
doctor
Involvement in Spirituality/Religion
have been meditating for about twelve years. apply it to my everyday life, and am now attempting to apply it to my work life also. particularly intersted in ideas about Mara/ emptiness, and now wanting to learn more about the concept of 'socially engaged buddhism'
What is your interest in Amida Trust
I am convinced that spirituality applies to more than just the meditation cushion and the meditation hall, but also to every aspect of our daily lives, especially in a world where there's more suffering than there needs to be. so does amida. I suspect we will get on like a house on fire ( a very pleasant fire)
How did you find this web site?
already read some of david's work. googled his name, and amida was amongst the top results

my first visit to Africa- not so long ago. My desire is really to uderstand how best we can help others, and these are a few of my thoughts...

The Problem Of The Problem

"The darkest thing about Africa has always been our ignorance of it.”

The aeroplane lands with a reassuring ease, and as usual I wait until all my co-passengers have departed before I get up from the seat which I suspect has been engineered to be as uncomfortable as possible. At last, the last few have departed and as I rise from my seated position, wink at the air hostess with whom I had exchanged a few flirtatious comments earlier. I make my way to the door on the… Continue

Prasada and Modgala would be better able to give you advice on addicted patients. Have you thought about the Buddhist Psychology programme?

yes, my understanding from what i have learned on the course is that as counsellors we are not really attempting to figure it all out but rather aiming to find a level of empathy for the client, to try to understand how they see things and how they experience the world, and to convey to them that we are truly listening and 'get' how things are for them. this in itself is of therapeutic value and, while we may never really know what is fully going on, we can always offer warmth and acceptance, which creates an environment that contains the possibility of change and growth.

what prompted my change in career direction? i can really onlly describe it as a change of heart and who knows where that came from!

Hi Majid, nice to hear from you. I would highly recommend the foundation course with Amida. It is very experiential and consequently much personal development takes place. I don't yet work in counselling, I will start a placement sometime in the next few months and once I have completed my advanced certificate I will be qualified to begin practicing as a counsellor. In that sense it is hard for me to answer your question about how I incorporate the spiritual principles into my practice. Buddhist principles are at the heart of the psychotherpay/counselling skills and theory that we learn and so I guess are infused into the practice. I'm afraid that I am not really qualified to answer this question though! Hope to see you on the course, Tara
