Profile Information

About Me:
First, the profile picture over to the left somewhere is of my granddaughter Grace and me at a nearby children's museum. She's face-painting us both; I'm trying to act dignified LOL.

I'm a Presbyterian minister currently serving a very small, elderly congregation in Chicago. If you're familiar with Chicago, we are located in the northwest part of the city, not far south of the suburb of Skokie.

I first learned about Amida Trust through my participation in a Christian-Buddhist dialogue group at Yahoo.com. Dharmavidya also posted there occasionally, and through him I first began to learn about -- and quickly became very powerfully drawn to -- Pure Land Buddhism. At his invitation, I began posting occasional pieces on the Amida interfaith dialogue page; and not long afterwards was invited to participate in the Ministry program as a distance learner.

Unfortunately, my small congregation has had -- and continues to have -- enormous problems, including a sizeable embezzlement that was discovered not long after I first began my service here. Time and again these problems have quickly swollen into "tsunamis" ("theo-tsunamis"? ... hmmmm, a sermon idea there!) ... and have emotionally and spiritually exhausted me, having consumed so much of my time that I not only have been far too absent from my own family (about which more in a moment) but from Ministry studies.

I finally re-joined the Ministry program in February, but by the end of March once again was inundated with problems here that devour almost all of my time. It is beyond wearying.

My wife Jan is a nurse who directs admissions at a hospice in Chicago, has her own patient load, and also directs the hospice's "alternative therapies" program. The latter include acupuncture, massage therapy, music therapy, art therapy, and any number of other allied practices that a hospice patient and/or family member may request.

We have three grown "boys." Jacob is our oldest. He is a pilot (small single-engine planes so far, although ready to move to larger engines and aircraft), gives private lessons as well as teaches in the flight school at Oklahoma State University, and was scheduled to begin as a pilot with a regional carrier (part of Continental Airlines) until the sudden downturn in the economy here led to all airlines releasing employees (pilots included) and largely putting on a hiring freeze. He lives with his family (including Grace, age 5 1/2, and her 2-year-old brother Aidan) in rural southeastern Oklahoma.

Our 2nd, Ben, teaches high school physics in Chicago and lives not far from us in Evanston. He is still single, although would love to be a dad. Ben is a terrific writer.

Our youngest, Noah, is engaged to be married late this year and who lives with us (basement apartment), with his fiance and her 2 young girls from a previous marriage. Noah will return to college soon -- after a 2-year absence while he just enjoyed working at nearby Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Business -- where he plans to major in engineering (I'm not sure yet what kind).

Of the 3, Ben is spiritually the most like me, and most interested -- such as it is at this point -- in Buddhism. Jan most likely would convert to Roman Catholicism if I weren't engaged in Presbyterian ministry.

Personally, I read voraciously (mostly in spirituality, biblical studies, some history and fiction, occasional poetry); and I love to write. I wrote a longish piece of historical fiction about 10 years ago, and 2 publishers immediately wanted to read the entire manuscript (I don't have an agent either!) ... I submitted it finally to the University of Oklahoma Press, since the historical event on which the novel is based took place in Tulsa in 1921 ... and while they rejected it, they did so with strong suggestions about how to handle a rewrite, and said they would be happy to read it again if I rewrote it. I know enough about the publishing biz to know that's an excellent sign ... but then again, I also serve this dysfunctional crisis-ridden aggravating little church, you see, and ...

Evanston, Illinois -- where we have lived for the past 20 years -- is home to a number of Buddhist groups. One of these, actually located in Chicago but with a "branch" in Evanston, is known as the Heartland Sangha. They meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings of each month -- unfortunately, my Saturdays often are exceeded in chaos only by my Sundays -- and, not nearly as often as I'd like, I join them for services. They know the Braziers from previous visits here, and it is one way for me to stay indirectly "active" with you all ... but only indirectly, and so far only occasionally.

But someday, possibly soon, I'll get back to the writing. And for the moment, that's who I am, sort of ...

Thanks for the friendship Steve. I'm very new to this group, and relatively new to actual Buddhist practice. I am drawn to very spiritual people, but find my ideals of a spiritual community are rarely met. Some say it is my own weakness, but I wonder, not that it isn't, but I wonder about the smugness of spiritual leaders like Lisa McCann mentioned below. Not just in Buddhism, but for all people who identify with being a leader and choose to help others.

I just recently picked up a copy of Swami Rama's Humble, Happy, and Wise. It's a collection of stories surrounding humility and the practice of being humble.

For my journey through life, I've always tried to help, but often times find people do not want my help as though my experience is not wealthy enough or wise enough.

It may not be. But I wonder, when you have a desire to help, yet people don't want your help, what do you do? When you want to be wise, yet people don't see you as wise, what do you do?

I understand you may not have the answer. I just thought I would put the question out there.

Thank you again for the friendship.

Hello!
Steve, I am so sorry to hear of your recent difficulties and glad that you are taking time to regroup. I also have two grown children, and I am amazed at how much harder parenting seems to be now compared to when they were little!
You mentioned Bits of Rubble Into Gold....an amazing book that really managed to make love and compassion and life so simple, and at the same time, profound. I resisted Pure Land Buddhism initially because I knew very little about it and because the Buddhists here in Northern Colorado seem a bit, well...I guess hostile is the word. I witnessed a person who is a Tibetan buddhist pretty much browbeat a pure land person and even said that she could not be Pure Land and really be a buddhist! And even though there are many therapists on this list, I found Pure Land to be refreshingly free of the self-righteous, somewhat smug Buddhism that I have occasionally encountered elsewhere. Pure Land humility is so refreshing!

You mention watching lots of movies, and I wonder what some of your favorites are? Right now, the movie "Crash" is at the top of my list.

Peace,
Lisa

I'm glad your program went well. It's always nice when you can reach out to a new group like that.

I'm also sorry to hear that things aren't going well for you and yours lately. I just started getting counseling myself for some weirdness in my life. Hopefully, we'll both come through this better.

Stay in touch--you're always a pleasure to talk to.

Oh, and thanks for congratulations. It's kind of cool--now I'm famous (sort of. Well, maybe not, but it's still cool.)

Are you back from retreat yet?

I'm writing to ask if you've contacted anyone about Dharmavidya coming to Illinois. I think there's a chance I could get my library to host a forum for him, but have no idea what would be involved in bringing him down here, or where to start.

Thanks,

I've just re-read your profile--I hope you get some rest on your leave. None of my business, so don't feel you have to respond, but what do you plan on doing during your sabbatical?

As for the Brazier visit, you might also want to contact Jiyo Agacki--he's a member of this site, and, although he lives in Wisconsin, is pretty well in touch with the Heartland Sangha.

I tried to contact you yesterday, but I don't think it worked. If it did, I apologize for bothering you again.

Did you ever get ahold of anyone at Heartland Sangha? Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

John

Thank you for contacting me. I'm not sure where Dharmavidya could come closer to Decatur--possibly Champaign, but there is no Shin community in Illinois outside of Chicago. There are Zen and Tibetan groups in the area, and they might turn out, but I'm not sure how much they'd be willing to help. We could ask.

I believe the Heartland Sangha actually grew out of the Buddhist Temple of Chicago, but the MBT would also be a good place to go for support.

I have contacts in the Heartland Sangha if you need them.

I have no idea what goes into organizing something like this, but would love the opportunity to help any way I can.

Gassho,

John
