OJO Retreat at The Buddhist House

March 19, 2009 at 8am to March 29, 2009 at 4pm
A period of practice, seminars and community living with reflection upon the legacy of our spiritual ancestors and the spirit that they have imparted to the Dharma community. The overall theme of this retreat period is "Right Effort within Other power". There is a common fallacy that Other Power and personal effort somehow exclude one another, whereas both are central elements in the Buddhist way. This event is open to everyone and anyone who would like to follow this event and do these practices…See More

A natural mystic, have contemplated and practised many paths, particularly the buddhist path. Have been involved with Amida Trust in the past in the year 2002. Books and Going Veggie

Posted on February 25, 2009 at 19:14 6 Comments

The books that I ordered from Amazon.co.uk arrived and started reading Dharmavidya's "Who Loves, Dies Well". When I have read it, it is likely that I would comment. The other books yet to be read are "The feeling Buddha" (David Brazier) and "The other Buddhism" (Caroline Brazier). Sorry I haven't bought "Guilt", it was not available on the amazon.uk site though amazon.com sells it in US$.

Started going veggie today. Will try it out, and it will be hard to resist temptation when… Continue

Chanting the Nembutsu during the Sunday Pureland Service

Posted on February 23, 2009 at 9:44 8 Comments

Yesterday I watched the Sunday Pureland Service, as held at the Buddhist House - on the Amida Trust ning's streaming TV. It is great to see the buddha rupa be venerated, and to see Dharmavidya, ansd Sundari, and others. The time coincided with the Buddhist Psychology training block "Creativity and Focus in Therapy", so the small congregation is somewhat enlarged. There was some nice chanting, but due to my partial hearing I was unable to make out the words. I caught some words of the talk by… Continue

Nembutsu - the first step

Posted on February 20, 2009 at 17:10 2 Comments

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." (Lao Tzu)

This blog is meant to be an occasional record of my progress through life as a devotee of Amida Buddha, and in association with Amida Trust. Thus it is a journey to the Pure Land. Where does the journey begin?

For me what starts the journey is the nembutsu. When I first start to utter the newbutsu, that is a turning point. I have chanted "Namo Amida Bu" once. My life is divided into two parts. Pre… Continue

Thank you. The way I see it, I feel balanced with Catholicism and Pureland Buddhism. Like if I have West, I must have East, too. I am glad you are tolerant. I have a hard time finding tolerant people.

I appreciate you can empathise with me and my difficulties. Do you suffer from isolation as well?

enlightened or bombu?

Other-power or Zazen?

The prison of the question of "liking or not liking"

Started by Katrien Sercu in Amida Trust & Amida-shu Development. Last reply by Robert McCarthy Apr 30. 9 Replies

It is surprising how a question, which was a step forwards earlier in life becomes an ennoying limitation that, in good moments, can evoke a smile in me as it is really a funny and stupid question.…Continue
