"How sad for the rest of their families and their neighbours. The terrible pull to suicide can be so strong as the secondnoble Truth indicates - the temptation on non-being. I am so glad to see people find amida and feel the call to life and here is…"

Katrien Sercu commented on Gustavo's blog post Dukkha
"I feel so hard the hopelessness of this man, of a lot op people, isolated from society and alone to survive without income or support. What a pressure to feel the responability as man, to support your family and to feel guilt and shame to be unable…"

Dharmavidya commented on Gustavo's blog post Dukkha
"It is understandable that a person might try to end it all if he felt that he was a complete failure in terms of the value system by which he and his community assess a life. As Buddhists we do not assess a life in terms of whether a person finds…"

Recently there was a tragedy in my area which affected me greatly. A father shot his wife, young son, and himself. It was heavily reported in the news. Many of the people interviewed could not understand how someone could do such an act. The family was a good family who was good to neighbors and helped others who were in difficult situation. There couldn’t be any situation that would rationalize such drastic action. I felt for the man and his family. You see, he had been unemployed for a long…See More

About Me:
When I first read the Buddha I became a devoted follower of his teachings. Its been more than 12 years since then. In the last year I have found the teachings of the Pure Land and had problems connecting them to the Buddha's teachings of self-power, "be a light unto yourselves". I have found it extremely difficult to reach the light on my own power. Is there another way?

Our small but lovely Birmingham group met at Adrian's house on Saturday afternoon. As always with this group, to meet like this reminded us all what a wonderful thing it is to be able to practise…Continue

enlightened or bombu?

Started by Thomas Myojo Radcliffe in Buddhist Teaching. Last reply by Robert McCarthy May 7. 9 Replies

Zen is clear that we are essentially enlightened beings. Pureland insists that we are hopelessly deluded. Both seem to me to be true. On the one hand the mind with all it's contradictions,…Continue

Other-power or Zazen?

Started by Dr Di in Amida Trust & Amida-shu Development. Last reply by Thomas Myojo Radcliffe May 5. 19 Replies

I see Amida Trust bringing the 2 together, or are they mutually exclusive? ie the here and now focus on breath of Zazen implies continuity and oneness, whereas the 'other- power' of Amida can be seen…Continue

The prison of the question of "liking or not liking"

Started by Katrien Sercu in Amida Trust & Amida-shu Development. Last reply by Robert McCarthy Apr 30. 9 Replies

It is surprising how a question, which was a step forwards earlier in life becomes an ennoying limitation that, in good moments, can evoke a smile in me as it is really a funny and stupid question.…Continue
