Profile Information

About Me:
I'm 35 in a few weeks (eek), work as a mental health nurse with young people, and have been dipping in and out of Buddhism for the last ten years or so. I used to attend an FWBO centre while I was doing my nurse training in Nottingham, but stopped going after I read some things on the internet that didn't sit right with me. Since then I've found it difficult to meditate, and only reading about Buddhism. Fortunately I do have some spiritual practice - I do yoga most days which helps me to stay grounded and centred. I've been on a few retreats at the Buddhist house in Narborough but not for about five years. I fluctuate between wanting to become a nun and being a hedonist, and as I get older I'm getting increasingly fed up with my chaotic lifestyle and compulsion to create drama in my life just for something to worry about! That just about sums it up!
Faith Background & Affiliation
Between Buddhism and humanism
Occupation or Primary Activity
Mental health nurse
Involvement in Spirituality/Religion
Introduced to Buddhism about ten years ago, have read various books, went to an FWBO group for about five years but left after I read some things on the internet I did not like. Have struggled to meditate since. Still read about Buddhism but feel like I'm a monkey in the forest looking for fruit.
What is your interest in Amida Trust
I enjoyed retreats at the centre in the past, when I lived closer. I have not really found any centres around Oxford that I felt comfortable in. Attended Jamyang Easter retreat (FMPT).

Our small but lovely Birmingham group met at Adrian's house on Saturday afternoon. As always with this group, to meet like this reminded us all what a wonderful thing it is to be able to practise…Continue

enlightened or bombu?

Started by Thomas Myojo Radcliffe in Buddhist Teaching. Last reply by Robert McCarthy May 7. 9 Replies

Zen is clear that we are essentially enlightened beings. Pureland insists that we are hopelessly deluded. Both seem to me to be true. On the one hand the mind with all it's contradictions,…Continue

Other-power or Zazen?

Started by Dr Di in Amida Trust & Amida-shu Development. Last reply by Thomas Myojo Radcliffe May 5. 19 Replies

I see Amida Trust bringing the 2 together, or are they mutually exclusive? ie the here and now focus on breath of Zazen implies continuity and oneness, whereas the 'other- power' of Amida can be seen…Continue

The prison of the question of "liking or not liking"

Started by Katrien Sercu in Amida Trust & Amida-shu Development. Last reply by Robert McCarthy Apr 30. 9 Replies

It is surprising how a question, which was a step forwards earlier in life becomes an ennoying limitation that, in good moments, can evoke a smile in me as it is really a funny and stupid question.…Continue
