Monthly Amida Hawai'i Gathering - September

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 17:38 3 Comments

We had our Monthly Amida Hawai'i gathering (potluck and service) Wendesday night.  Installed the Ancestor's Shrine...discussed how to bear the great grief of the world...looked at the ways we try to build little Pure Lands in our daily lives...spent time preparing for Dharmavidya's visit next month.

We placed the first two photos on the Ancestor's Shrine...a picture of my late Zen Buddhist teacher - Robert Aitken Roshi and a picture of my wife's grandfather - William Costa.…

Introduction to Buddhism Presentation - Big Island

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 3:29 3 Comments

I just had the opportunity to speak to the full student body and staff at a college preparatory High School in Waimea.  There were 380 people in attendance...and it took place in a wonderful rustic Chapel.  It was part of their on-going Chapel series entitled "Awakenings." It is a school where there are about 100 students from Asia attending. I was more nervous than usual...having never spoken to a large group of people about Buddhism before. It went okay...can't say I have "acquired the… Continue

New Dojo for Amida Hawai'i!

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 6:49 1 Comment

We got a very short notice that we had to be out of our Amida Hawai'i Pureland Buddhist Dharma Center...so we secured a new place and did a one day complete make-over!  Patched-up holes, painted, hosed off the window screens, washed windows, dusted, steam cleaned the carpet, and moved in all the furniture! It's lovely!  A special thanks to sangha members Janice and Keli for helping with the renovation! We had our first Monthly Potluck and Sangha Practice on March 2nd!  New place, old practice -… Continue

I just attended an International Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect on the island of Oahu (Hawai'i). One of the Keynote speakers, Mr. Nainoa Thompson, was sharing about the devastating impact to the Native Hawaiians as a result of the US government overthrow of their sovereign government in 1893. He shared his perspective on how this… Continue

Hi Shantikara,

Many thanks for the friend invitation. I've been admiring and enjoying what you've been putting out from Hawaii, it looks like a great community you're building there.

It feels good to have come into the Shu, to name something as a real and central part of my life now.

Speak soon, and all the best to you way over there.

Hello Franco, I'm looking forward to the mentoring process. Thank you for agreeing to undertake this supportive role. When I read Michael's comments below, you must have the Canadian group. I live in Kitchener, Ontario , Canada. Kitchener is 120 km. from London, Ontario so I was able to spend some wonderful individual time with Caroline during her visit. At the end of a group process, I took refuge as Amida-Shu. In a blog after Caoline's visit I wrote about my experience. I have been a long time Tibetan vajrayana practitioner. Looking forward to having a "spiritual friend" mentor not sure how to name this relationship just yet. Namo Amida Bu

Hi Franco, thank you for agreeing to be my mentor. One thing I should ley you know is that I am not a computer wiz and some times have difficulty with the finding my way around the Amida Trust website.etc. I attend the Shin Buddhist temple in Kelowna B.C. Canada. Last weekend I officially took refuge in a confirmation ceremony together with my wife Genevra. At present I am involved with sutra chanting in Englishe at the temple three mornings per week. I look forward to our relationship. Namo Amida Butsu

Hello, Franco, thank you for adding me to your friends' list. My computer has been down and end of the schoolyear is coming, or should I say hopping? Will have more time to enter some of the discussions. I hope your counseling business has taken off well!
Which Starbucks are you meeting at? Is there one in Waimea?

Hi Franco,
Thanks for your note regarding Amida USA. No, in the most recent list that I saw, I am not a Board Member in the new entity. I'm glad that the status of Amida West has finally been brought up to date.
Best wishes to you and to the Amida community on Big Island.
Mike.

enlightened or bombu?

The prison of the question of "liking or not liking"
