When Shakyamuni Buddha died some of his followers took on the task of systematizing his teachings in books that came to be called the Abhidharma. These systematized teachings include details of the Buddha’s teachings about the structure and conditioning of the mind. Over the centuries these teachings were further refined and developed, especially by the followers of a movement within Buddhism called Yogacara. In modern times, the Abhidharma and Yogacara principles have been recognised as anticipating many of the principles usedin modern psychology. However, they also offer a distinctive perspective on psychology and life. Buddhist principles offer and interpretation of the mind that centres upon liberation from self rather than self-assertion. They also integrate behavioural, analytic and human potential elements in a unique manner. Buddhist psychology thus provides a comprehensive model of human functioning that has both ethical and therapeutic implications that is distinct from Western approaches in crucial particulars.

Amida Trust offers a comprehensive training programme in Buddhist psychology led by Caroline Brazier (author of the book ‘Buddhist Psychology’) and David Brazier (author of ‘Zen Therapy’ and ‘The Feeling Buddha’, as well as ‘Beyond Carl Rogers’). There are both distance learning and attendance courses available with introductory, professional and post-qualifying levels of study. Full details can be found at Buddhist Psychology Info
