Altar questions

Hi,

I'll be moving in April and having more space. Right now, I have a small Amida statue and rosary but would like to have an official altar in my new place. I'm going to ask a friend to make me the altar out of wood. Is there anything I should know first, like dimensions, type of wood to use or does it have to have a door?

On a side note, I feel strange about having a door on my altar. Seems like its wrong to close Amida up. I've always had him exposed to everything thats going on in my environment. Anyone like to share thoughts about this?

Thanks so much. I have one now but was thinking of getting a more formal altar and I see all these altars on the internet, for Pureland and they are always the kind that close. Appreciate the info.
