Through the Dharma we learn
That this ultimately
Is a friendly place and we have
No need to hide when out alone
And something big and hungry
Comes walking and we
May get eaten and we will
Get eaten and even if we do
What better place to share a meal?
Say Grace and eat as we are eaten?

All too easy to say what is true
Living it is another matter
As the bear rises up on his two feet
Arms outstretched in welcome
Mouth open hot breath in anticipation
Billowing forth white dragons
Or the slow rapaciousness of cancer
Killing us by degrees
What have we then of the Vow?

Friends to journey with me
As far as they can across white hot ash
Chanting Amitabha
Love birthing iris blue bouquets
Lotus petals to cool my feet
My hand being held
Namo Amida Bu's fragrent as
Lily of the Valley flowers.

Friends that lift us up by their care
And the knowing that this
Is the 'Whole of the Dharma'.

and who know that we are all being eaten

over so many days
What bliss to have friends.
