Let There Be Peace
O let there be peace!
Let the differences between people be celebrated.
Let them be our strength and richness.
Let it not be thought that we can only be at peace when difference ceases.
Let us love those who are different from ourselves
And let us appreciate each in their unique glory
Let there be happiness and sorrow appropriately.
Let us meet suffering in good spirit.
Let people love each other, have a friendly nature
And be moved by the troubles of others.
When love fails, or meets with frustration,
Let us help one another to rise rather than fall.
Let us be creative and inventive.
Let us co-operate, even when it is difficult.
Let us have faith in the future.
Let there be safety on every street and in every home,
But let there also be wild places and challenging frontiers.
Let people walk together with commitment and patience
Vigorous in their engagement, inspired in their work.
Let us give rise to healthy cultures in all diversity
Let us be compassionate to every creature.
Let us have the courage to live by the little wisdom that we have gleaned.
Let religion remain alive and be a cause of fellowship and inspiration.
Let secular life be based on something more up-lifting than self-interest and uniformity.
Let caste be abolished and inter-communal relations be harmonious.
Let us smile on the ordinary person
Complete with his or her greed, pettiness and limitation,
Knowing that a true saviour will love all without qualification,
Not merely those who have become saints and angels.
Let us know that though we are not gods, we can live in a similar light
As long as we do not lose our knowledge
That we too are ordinary and vulnerable
Let us live in the ideal of non-violence and
When violence nonetheless comes
Let us keep to a loving heart for all parties
Knowing that we are not innocent.
Let us strive to overcome the negative effects of discrimination.
Let neither women nor men face humiliation
But let us not be too proud to make amends
When we have acted improperly
Let us build a world of fellowship and faith.
By small acts, bold visions and warm embraces
Let us have minds and hearts big enough
To encompass all that is in this real world
That our love for one another may be the fountain
Of universal peace.
