I have recently spoken to many people who report that their spiritual path started when they were young children, often reporting profound experiences. These range from mystical experiences of bliss and connection to a deep sense of "knowing things" to refusing to eat meat from age 3 out of a sense of compassion for animals. Do many of you remember childhood experiences which started you on or confirmed your spiritual journey?

Hi, Majella and others. Great IDEA!!!

Yes, today, just a few weeks short of 53 yrs of age, I am doing exactly what I thought I would be doing, back when I was 4 years old. My journey has been one of both Eastern and Western experiences. Brought up in both the Anglican and Presbyterian churches, I felt right at home, however, I kept having memories of past lives. When I told my mother about them she said I must have been dreaming. By the age of 5 I wanted to stop eating meat, as that is when I found out that meat came from animals. My parents didn't take care of us and we were fed processed meats and cheeses. When I left home, in my teens, I became a vegetarian off and on and then 23 years ago, became a consistent vegetarian. These experiences, plus numerous dreams lead me to study Buddhism and Daoism, not to mention the early church, which had many vegetarians, with evidence for a vegetarian Jesus and apostles.

Yes i remember a fair few things from my childhood, things that might put the ghost up your spine too.
I wasnt necessarily brought up deeply religious, although religion was an open discussion in my home and my parents have left my decision as to which path i follow entirely my own.
When I was young we was always travelling around, and ive been down roads that ive recognised, although my parents have both said we havnt, I was even able to warn them of a sharp corner comming up.
When I was 13 my great nan died and one night not so long after her death while sitting in the front room, i felt a touch upon my shoulder, I could also feel her presence with me while i went to school, sort of like a guardian angel helping me in my studies.
When i was about 5 years old i was woken in my bedroom by a man, who shined with a green light around him, the whole house was asleep and i hid under my covers. When i used to go round to the neighbours i could see ghosts of animals running up and down his stairs like it was a playground for them, cats, dogs, rabbits, all with this same sort of green light around them. And this was in broard daylight.
Ive joined churches and prayed for people who are on death row, to find out that within a week they have subsequently been released from death row, this has confirmed to me an existence of "something" out there that listens to our deepest fears and our deepest feelings and is willing to give us if we just ask for it, whether you can call it god or just a sentient being who is helpful, who knows.
Ive met beings of light on my staircase, just before a huge waterfall from the attic crashed down the ceiling, been shaken awake by something i could not see when i was ill and sleeping across my bed ( not in it).
When i was 17 i moved out of home and started to be a vegetarian, then i moved into a frenchmans house who wouldnt let me, then i moved into a flat again, and started being a vegetarian again until ive moved back in with my parents who wont support the idea of not eating chicken or fish or anything that comes from another sentient being.
Ive had numerous dreams that im meant to help people but how is completely beyond me, I usually attract people who have alot of problems with low self esteem, or emotional/ physchological problems who come to me for support, advice and friendship and someone to offload there problems onto. And having had a bit of a mixed up childhood i can understand where they are usually comming from.

Do you still remember your past lives memories? (I've been told that children who remember them often forget when they get to 7).

Hi, Majella,

I do recall some almost still like memories, however, they are rather boring. What I would like to share is something that happened with my daughter, when she was little.

This will be a little long, so, I am sorry for that.

When my daughter, Erika, was 3 years old, she began a series of very strange discussions with me. Prior to these discussions, I was not a believer in reincarnation. I was not sure if my own memories, as a child, were real or if they were dreams like my mother said... So, I thought it might be possible, but I was not convinced. All that changed after what happened.

First, let me say that I must preface this with a bit of my own childhood.

When I was young, my father was a big sports fanatic. He loved to play and loved to watch and his favourite to watch was Hockey. My father wanted me to get into hockey and he taught me to skate about the same time I could walk. But, I hated it. I hated skating and I hated hockey. I guess that is pretty bad since I am Canadian. As I grew up, I came to hate hockey even more as I felt that it kept my father and I from having a close relationship. I was into spiritual things right from the get go and my father was into sports. He was always going to hockey games and watching it on TV. I felt that he liked hockey more than me and I came to really resent the game.

As an adult I never warmed up to hockey though I had long been over not having a relationship with my father.

When I met my ex-wife, I told her we would get along fine just so long as she never put hockey on the TV. She was fine with that.

My daughter was born in 1985 and by 1988/9 she had never saw a hockey game. My ex and I are both very protective parents and my daughter, Erika, was never left with a baby sitter until she was 11 years old. Either my wife or I were always home. So there was no way that Erika ever saw a hockey game. Neither had we ever taken Erika to an arena.

One day, when Erika was three, just about to turn four, she asked me a question. She asked me why here son no longer came to pick her up to go see the hockey games. I was shocked and asked Erika what she had just said and she repeated the exact same thing.

Erika was quite upset and said she missed her son. She said that he drove a white car, had red hair and wore a 3/4 length, brown leather jacket. We are all animal rights activists and have no leather clothing. I asked Erika when this happened and she said, when she was an old lady.

Erika will be 24 years old in May and no longer remembers these conversations, but I do and they helped me believe in reincarnation.

take care,
Mike

I wonder why some people have really strong experiences or memories when they're still children.Do you think we all do and then forget, or just some people do?

Reply to This

Yes i think all children have some sort of connection to the spiritual plane and unfortunately due to many reasons it is forgotten, we get closed down, bogged and dogged by society, rules, consequences, and general daily living. For some people it is forgotten out of fear of being considered insane by other members of society, for others it is beaten out of them in their own homes and so anything to do with spirituality is then recognised as painful and is repressed. For others it is just that they forget to keep in contact with the otherside as life takes more of a hold.
Its like skills that you use, if you dont use them for a long time you forget how to do something until you get back in touch with using that skill and then it feel really rusty - the spiritual side will feel faint at first or you might feel nothing for a while.

Hello,
I just was thinking of my own childeren and realize that each of them in there own special way have something of a "knowing" of a higher sense.
What I wonder is there a connection with being (high) sensitive or is "spirituality" something else? Hmm
Looking forward to a reply
