Hi Freya: There is a group called the Buddhist Healthcare Chaoplaincy Group meeting nationally with a view to strengthening opportunities for Buddhists in hospital and other health related chaplaincy. We have just been officially approved by the government sponsored multi-faith chaplaincy advisory group to set up routes for appprovcing Buddhist chaplains and supporting their development. It would be very good to have you involved. Next time you come to The Buddhist House lets talk about it. I also hope we can run some Buddhist training either through Amida or through the BHCCG. Will keep you posted on this

I am currently half way through an 8 week course to become a chaplaincy lay visitor in the Coventry area. I am struggling somewhat with the totally Christo-centric nature of the material we are presented with (and all the other participants are Christian too) but I totally believe in the value of the work/role and am grateful for the support and advice I have had from Susthama.

Hello! I am a new friend of Amida and I am also a hospital chaplain in the USA. Actually, I am also a clinical pastoral educator, which means I am working full time in training chaplains. This is my main interest: how to train good chaplains to take spiritual care of people in crisis. I would like to have a dialogue about the training of Buddhist chaplains. Of course, as chaplains we are always interfaith in approach. We take care of anyone whom we happen to meet, but there are aspects of Pureland applied to chaplaincy that I would like to talk about.

I started off the chaplaincy work for Amida in Leicester some years ago before heading out to India. i am not sure whether I will be doing hands on work here in London as there are so many things to do for Amida both in London and for the various committees I am involved in however I do see the space I am providing at festivals as chaplaincy work in a very informal setting reaching out to other communities.

I am interested in being in this discussion group as I have just been asked to be a Buddhist faith advisor by the chaplaincy and York St John University.I am approaching this in a sprit of seeking rather than certainty, and have made that clear. I would be very grateful for your advise Prasada and Sujatin about how to procede in this new role. There is another advisor from the NKT centre at Pocklington who I believe I will be meeting at an interfaith gathering tommorow.
with best wishes Diane

I've been Buddhist Chaplain at Newcastle University for the last five years and I'm Buddhist Contact Person at Northumbria University - and have just started the next step of the process that we are setting up for the appointment of chaplains of all faiths at Northumbria, whereby I will be a full chaplain there. I teach Buddhism and run 'meditation For Relaxation' sessions for students and staff at both Universities. I'm also involved at Newcastle with the Students Welfare network and with the Staff Stress Support group. As from last Christmas I do three days a week university work.

It would be good to hear about what other people are doing. I do hospital chaplaincy work in Leicester, based at the General, but covering the other hospitals if Buddhists are there. I go in once a week and have a ward where I do general visiting as well as seeing any patients who have identfied themselves as Buddhist on admission.
