Peter Jollies animal circus is in Mt. Sorrel (see attached flyer). There is a concerned resident who contacted me yesterday about this circus coming to town. She'd like help to raise people's awareness and educate people about animal cruelty and how unnecessary this form of entertainment is in modern times.
I'm not sure if anyone has more information or ideas about what to do but comments and suggestions would be much appreciated.
Have you tried looking into clips of animal cruelty in the circus environment on You Tube? I bet you can find lots there, and it might serve to stimulate ideas about bringing awareness to the community using the images. The shock value will serve to move others into action.
Peace,
Amaya
Thanks very much Amaya - here's a piece I put together and posted on my blog. I hope we can dissuade or at least cause individuals to think twice before going to the circus.
May you be well and happy
May you be free from harm
May you be safe from inner and outer dangers
-------------
May we be held in compassion
May we be at ease in body, mind and spirit
May we be free from pain and sorrow
-------------
May all creatures live in peace
May all lives be respected
May all beings live in harmony
MAY ALL SUFFERING QUICKLY CEASE
----------------------------
One of the most difficult things to do is to change our way(s) about going about our daily lives. Each and every one of us has got a script written in seemingly invisible ink. We don't see our own habitual reactions or responses and we don't really question whether our habit patterns are a cause for concern to the rest of the world. Or maybe we do but our script seems to be written in indelible ink. We play our part on stage and we know that we are actors in a familiar play and again we don't think it's a huge problem to others around us.
The stone cast in the middle of a calm lake is bound to cause ripples that effect the entire body of water. How can we know the extent of the damage our activities have caused if we refuse to see the link between existence and suffering?
Susthama,
I've just sent Prasada a video clip on animal abuse in circus as well as other types...please ask her to share it with you. I found it rather difficult to watch and it leaves me shamed to be human.

No problem, I did spend a bit of time researching the whole business of animal circuses and came across some interesting videos and other sites. I'm inspired to create a video myself and so will hopefully have time to work on one - I've never put one together before but I'll see what I can create. Some of them were very sad and too difficult to watch and I think to make one that gently pinches the heart rather than generate disgust and anger at humans will perhaps be more inspiring.
Captive Animals Protection Society ( http://www.captiveanimals.org/index.htm ) supply leaflets and information to give out about circus cruelty.
When Bobby Roberts Circus came to Suffolk a couple of weeks ago , a friend and I gave out leaflets and talked to shop owners who were displaying posters. Most took the posters down and some replaced them with Stop Circus Cruelty posters including our Co-Op store.
We also went to shops to ask for the half price vouchers that were given away free.
On the evening that we held a quiet protest outside the circus, only 5 families attended, so we hope that some good was done.
Stephanie.
Well done! Amazing how a simple act of changing a poster can present a completely different kind of view of that society. It sounds like strategic thinking and all for the benefit of our furry friends. Thanks for sharing this!
A small stone can cause a big ripple.
There are so many animal rights causes that need help, it is difficult to know who to support and when. I have started sending out leaflets from Animal Aid or Hillside etc inside all my posted letters and have had no complaints so far :-)
I tend to send the ones that don't use too many "shock tactic" photos, I hope that they will be more likely to be read.
best wishes, Stephanie.
